Opinion: Kanam: in Gagdi’s Shoes, what else would you do? – By Kankimes Al-Ghazali Mohd

September 14, 2020.

Before reacting to that question-headline, please, take a little while to walk in the ‘shoes’ of Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Legislator, Rt.Hon Yusuf Adamu Gagdi.

A few persons have been writing to condemn what they perceive as Gagdi’s political incorrectness. They refer to the legislator’s expression of concern over ceaseless Kidnappings for ransom of the people he serves and swore to protect; and on kidnapping directed at his immediate family members. “The legislator is too noisy and plays to the gallery”, one of them wrote.

In my understanding, the problem of these critics is not the merit of Gagdi’s concern, but that ‘he speaks in public to undermine the security mechanism in Kanam and Nigeria at large.’ In other words, Gagdi should only raise security issues at closed-door meetings.

Well, if my school teacher, pastor Haruna Mallo were to respond to one of the articles, he would certainly employ a prayer-quote: “Father forgive them for they know not what they do [or write about Gagdi].”

Anyway, here is what we know. It is a quick and chronicled background to being in Gagdi’s ‘shoes’.

Being security conscious and pro-active, Gagdi sponsored a Bill on Repeal of Police Act. The Police Act Repeal Bill sponsored by humble Gagdi to alter the provisions of the Police Act is among other things aimed at engendering optimum security of lives and property of Nigerians by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and to accommodate community policing and other sundry issues. The Bill has already been passed to law.

On Saturday, August 12, 2020, Gagdi’s first effort towards curtailing the kidnapping menace as legislator, was a closed-door meeting in Kanam with the security’s top command, leading the fight against banditry. Afterwards, he summoned a security meeting with political stakeholders, traditional rulers and religious leaders.

August 20, 2020 Gagdi paid Advocacy Visit and Appeal for Detachment of Special Police Force to Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam. Following the rising spate of kidnappings and the surge of heinous crimes in Kanam Local Government in particular and the Constituency in general, Gagdi visited the Inspector General of Police, IGP Adamu Mohammed in his office. Consequently, the IGP has instructed the AIG in charge of intelligence, Ibrahim Lamorde to send a detachment of Special Squad (SS) to Kanam Local Government Area who are to overlook Pankshin and Kanke Local Government Areas for a period of three (3) months at first instance to curb the menace of kidnappings in the area.

August 24, 2020, Gagdi visits Operation Safe Heaven Commander on the Plateau and seek collaboration and support to tame the menace. Rt Hon Gagdi requested for the formation of military checkpoints in Garga axis, Gagdi-Dugub axis and Namaran-Kapel axis, where the kidnappers and other criminals recently had field days perpetrating their heinous activities.

Gagdi have contributed immensely in funding the local vigilante which has no doubt enhanced their capacity in managing critical entry and exit points in Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Local Government Areas. To strengthen the vigilante the more and in line with the community policing, Gagdi had vowed to partner with the conventional Nigeria Police Force and the local vigilante through logistic supports.

Gagdi has held series of one-on-one meetings with stakeholders, security heads, and the Local vigilantee group.

To match prayers with action, Gagdi on September 12, 2020 while delivering a keynote speech in a security symposium organized by APC youths online promised to procure and deploy three(3) Toyota Hilux vehicles to the fight against banditry. These vehicles are critical to the operations of the military, other security forces and volunteers in the fight against banditry. He also promised to procure and distribute motor-cycles to security operatives and volunteers across the Local Governments to stem the tides of criminality.

Gagdi also supported families of kidnapped victims, and equally aid in payment of ransom to over ten kidnapped victims in the constituency.

However, in the midst of all these strategic meetings, series of security interventions and politically-correct consultations, one thing remained certain- Gagdi efforts yielded the much expected result. Over ten suspects were arrested in connection with the crime and since their arrest no new kidnappings cases were been reported.

While some pro masses leaders are working tirelessly to end kidnapping, robbery and other criminal acts, some are busy sabotaging their efforts just because of political and material gains.

For every security personnel and all others working against the well being of this Local Government, may God forgive you so Kanam and Nigeria would have peace! The saboteurs shall be put to shame in an unprecedented manners insha Allah.

Now, which leader, with undiluted conscience, would remain silent, reluctant and inactive because of political-correctness? Whose voice, above the legislator’s, would loudly call for more decisive actions needed in Kanam?

In a nutshell, if in Gagdi’s shoes, what else would you do?
